Fall Grad Spotlight: Lorrie Cockrell

Lorrie Cockrell, from Chillicothe, Ohio, is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in technical and applied studies and an associate degree in computer science technology. 

What are your next steps or plans for the future? 
I am excited to see what the future holds, and I am looking forward to the opportunities that lie ahead. I have a passion for helping others and I plan to use my education and experiences to make a positive impact in my community. 

What was your ah-ha moment at OHIO—that point where you said to yourself, “I’ve got this!”?
My first semester at OHIO was overwhelming and many times I doubted my decision to return to college. A couple of weeks after the end of the first semester I received a letter in my mailbox. I had made the dean's list! That was when I knew - “I’ve got this!”.

Why did you choose OHIO? 
I originally chose OHIO for the strong online program and the affordable tuition. I stayed at OHIO because of the caring professors and the sense of acceptance and belonging I have always felt here. I am proud to become an OHIO alum. 

Who were your favorite professors and how did they make an impact on your life?
During my time at OHIO, I have had so many wonderful, caring professors and it is difficult to pick a favorite. But there is one professor who had a greater impact on me than she will ever know.

Professor Lisa Wallace goes above and beyond, and she genuinely cares about her students. I had the privilege to take three communications courses with her and each class was a great learning experience. She helped me learn and understand more about myself in two semesters than I was able to figure out in a lifetime. 

What was the hardest hill you had to climb (not counting Jeff Hill) at OHIO? And how did you overcome challenges or obstacles in your path?
Returning to college as an older student was the hardest hill I had to climb at OHIO. Learning to juggle family, school, and work responsibilities required a great deal of organization and perseverance. I am very thankful for the support and encouragement of my family and friends. 

What are your favorite OHIO memories?
One of my favorite OHIO memories was when my son chose OHIO for the College Credit Plus (CCP) program. He has found the same acceptance and belonging as I have experienced at OHIO. I have been given a wonderful opportunity to support and encourage him as he progresses through his college journey.

What’s the one thing you would tell a new OHIO student not to miss?
The one thing I would tell a new OHIO student not to miss is the tremendous number of resources available to assist them. Regardless of the issue (academic, financial, or personal) a new student should know that it is always OK to ask for help.
