Keeping Bobcats Informed, Nov. 16, 2022

Bobcat Parents & Families,

Despite the dip in temperature, spirits are high on campus. This week we're recognizing International Education Week by giving much-deserved attention to OHIO's global engagement through education and research. Throughout the week, our entire campus community comes together to celebrate. I'm proud of our global community, drawing students, faculty, and staff from around the world.

Next week is Thanksgiving break, then our students are back on campus for one week before finals and fall commencement are upon us. If you're like me, that is a lot to process! I'm sure our students are feeling it too, so please let us know how we can support them. If you are not familiar with OHIO's mental health and counseling services available to students, then please consider attending this webinar on Thursday evening to learn more.

In gratitude,

Kathy

Tips for the Job Search

Start early

Give yourself plenty of time to work through application materials and prepare online searches.

Seek advice

Meet with a career coach to practice interviewing, review your resume, and learn networking tips.

Ask around

Let everyone know you're looking for a job. You never know which connections will make the difference!

Make the Most of the Season

For many, the holidays bring both joys and trials, connections and conflicts, leisure and pressure — and college students are not immune. Going into this season, consider how you can protect your well-being, prepare yourself to navigate stressful situations with grace, and find enjoyment through it all.

PRACTICE GRATITUDE

Consider your blessings, and don't do this half-heartedly. Gratitude practices have the most impact when you push yourself. Each day, write down 25 things (nope, not a typo) that you appreciate in life.

GIVE GENEROUSLY

Donate your time and talent to people in your community, reach out to a friend to express your appreciation for them, buy gifts for a child who might not otherwise get them, do the dishes for your parents — you get the idea.

GET YOUR SELF-CARE ON

Whether it's through relaxing, exercising, or participating in your favorite hobbies, take time to rejuvenate yourself each day.

FIND SOCIAL SUPPORT

Take part in drop-in support resources dedicated to providing you with an opportunity to share your experiences. Try out The Grad Pad, the First Generation Affinity Group, or the Worthy Women Affinity Space.

Not seeing a group that fits your needs? Get connected with others through Togetherall, an anonymous, online community for mental health support.

Save your money, get scholarships

We know it's not in everyone's nature to plan a year in advance, but when it comes to getting paid it's absolutely worth it! Now is the time for continuing students to find scholarships, so keep these guidelines in mind:

1. Complete the application by the Feb. 1, 2023 deadline.

2. The opportunities are for all students, including current year freshmen.

3. Apply online or through your student center account under the "Student Services " link.

4. If selected to receive a scholarship, you'll find out via email in March 2023.

Native American Heritage Month

November is a time to celebrate the diverse cultures and important contributions of Indigenous people. It's also a time to raise awareness about the unique challenges Indigenous people have faced historically. To uplift their voices and change the false narratives about Native attitudes in our society, we must begin by cultivating awareness.

Examine your assumptions

Pay attention to the language you use in conversations among peers. Help each other see where you are inadvertently falling into assumptions and encourage each other to use better practices.

Be mindful of stereotypes

Make sure to not just refer to the Native person as Native American. Refer to their specific tribal affiliation and use the correct terminology. When in doubt, ask.

Challenge outright bigotry

If you hear or see others perpetuating myths about Indigenous peoples — whether out of ignorance or blatant racism — share with them the correct information.
