Prepare for a day of dancing and donations with BobcaThon’s dance marathon
BobcaThon – a yearlong, student-run fundraiser benefiting the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio (RMHC of Central Ohio) – will host its energizing 12-hour dance marathon on Feb. 17, but the OHIO community can get in on the action early from anywhere with today’s “$5K in a Day” challenge.
Starting on Jan. 31 at 7 p.m., BobcaThon aims to raise $5,000 within 24 hours, making strides toward the event’s overall 2018 goal of $100,000. You can participate in this online giving day bydonating online.
The RMHC of Central Ohio provides a home away from home, meals and other assistance to families with children who have a serious illness and are receiving care at Columbus-area hospitals – a benefit some OHIO alumni, faculty and staff have received.
“We’re always pushing the idea of a Bobcat family,” said Joe Brenckle, OHIO Alumni Association graduate assistant for campus relations and BobcaThon adviser. “This isn’t just affecting random people out there. We’re raising money for our own Bobcats, professors and staff.”
Anyone in the OHIO community can participate in BobcaThon’s dance marathon. Throughout the event, dancers will play games, learn a line dance and hear from families who have benefitted from the RMHC of Central Ohio. These activities all lead to one highly anticipated announcement: the 2018 fundraising total.
“The dance marathon is a great chance for the community to get connected,” BobcaThon President Carolyn Appelhans, BSS ’18, said. “It helps us realize how important health is for everyone. If you’re sick, you can’t stand for 12 hours. It really drives home why we’re raising money.”
During the 2016-2017 academic year, more than 800 students, faculty and alumni raised nearly $75,000 for the cause.
“It’s really noteworthy that there are OHIO students who take the time and are passionate about helping other people,” Brenckle said.
To participate in the dance marathon, bring comfortable shoes, phones and chargers, and a refillable water bottle. Check out how to donate and further get involved.
