Athena Cinema announces return of annual Summer Family Film Series – Beat the Heat $2 Days

For those who seek the cool of the air-conditioned theater, and the fun of an afternoon movie this summer, look no further. The Athena Cinema is bringing back its annual “Beat the Heat $2 Days,” a family film series and fundraiser for Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Athens County, featuring seven classic films and fun for all ages happening June 9–Aug. 18.

“We have a great lineup for this year and think that our theme of ‘Throwback Fantasy’ will be fun for all ages. We will be featuring a special teen night this year, and one of the films will be part of the official events of the Ohio Brew Week Last Call Celebration,’” said Alex Kamody, director of the Athena Cinema.

The Athena Cinema will show afternoon screenings of popular family films on select Saturday afternoons at 3 p.m. The first film, “The Phantom Tollbooth” will be June 9. A teen night special offering of “Moonrise Kingdom” is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, June 22, followed the next day by “The Dark Crystal” at 3 p.m. June 23.

Other scheduled screenings include “The Goonies,” on July 7, a 50th Anniversary Restoration of “Yellow Submarine” on July 21 (this screening will be
part of the Ohio Brew Week Last Call celebration), “Hook” on Aug. 4 and “The Secret of Nimh” on Aug. 18.

“Our goal is to provide a low-cost entertainment option to area families, support several area children's organizations, and bring business to uptown Athens in the summer,” Kamody said.

The price of admission to the shows will be a suggested minimum donation of $2 per ticket. All donations will go to Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Athens County.

Tickets will be available one week before each scheduled screening, which are one-time only events with a limited number of tickets available. Tickets may be purchased in the Athena Cinema lobby, which is open Monday-Friday from 4 to 10 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 2:30 to 10 p.m.

This series is made possible with the generous support of our partners: The Ohio University Department of Real Estate Management, Community Engagement and Economic Development, as well as the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce, Athens County Children Services, Athens County Public Libraries, Athens Prosecutor’s Office and Ohio University Credit Union.

This season’s films are also available to non-profit, private community groups on a different date that coincides with their schedules. Examples of past recipients of these sponsored screenings have been ATCO and Kids on Campus. Organizations interested in coordinating a screening are encouraged to contact Alex Kamody at kamodya@ohio.edu.
