Women’s Leadership Symposium brings inspiration to all

 

The Ohio University and The Ohio State University alumni associations joined forces this past weekend to host the first Women’s Leadership Symposium at The Ohio Union in Columbus. Rightfully titled, “A Day To Inspire,” the event drew more than 400 women who walked away with new insight on self-care, gender dynamics, emotional intelligence and much more.

Offered more than 20 workshops, some attendees had trouble choosing from so many intriguing options.

“I just thought [the event] looked really interesting. Then, as they released more information about the program, I was really excited, because the speakers looked really great,” said Carolyn Gasiorek, BSHEC ’75, MSHEC ’80. “The topics, as well as all the credentials of all the speakers were very impressive to me.”

Many in attendance simply sought the event’s positive, welcoming atmosphere.

“I get a lot of energy from other women… I wanted to be empowered, and I feel like when I come to events like this, I just walk away with so much energy and I’m ready to take on the day,” OSU alumna Morgan Buckner said.

Others came to learn from the more than two dozen notable speakers.

“It’s been good to be reminded of our own accomplishments and to be reminded to be proud of that as well,” said Diane Cahill, BBA ’04, MBA ’13.

Former Ohio Supreme Court Justice Yvette McGee Brown delivered the keynote address, captivating hundreds by explaining how “women need to get a little more gritty.”

“We all have the ability to lead from where we are,” said Brown, BSJ ’82, who also earned her juris doctor from The Ohio State University. “So, whatever it is that you have in your life that may be holding you back, you use that as strength to push you forward.”

“As somebody said in our last session, it’s sad to see that the issues of 46 years ago—when I graduated—are still around today,” OHIO Associate Professor of Accountancy Ann Gabriel said. Gabriel explained how her generation was ready to “pass the torch” to a newer generation in order to help fight for women’s issues today.

The event gave women of all ages, occupations and backgrounds a chance to openly discuss issues they experience.

“I think at any stage of our career we need a little shot in the arm sometime, a little pep talk, a little… reenergizing, and I certainly got that today,” OSU alumna Joyce Meredith said.

Above all, many found the symposium to be a place where they could combine two of their passions: Ohio University and The Ohio State University.

“I just think it was a good, uplifting event,” said Lori Kehrle, BBA ’95, who now works as a business manager at OSU. “And because I’m affiliated with both schools, I jumped all over this. I definitely wanted to make sure I was a part of it.”
