Reaffirming OHIO's values as an inclusive community

The following message was shared with the OHIO campus community on Tuesday, July 24 by President M. Duane Nellis, Interim Executive Vice President and Provost Elizabeth Sayrs, Vice President for Student Affairs Jason Pina, Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion Gigi Secuban and Ohio University Police Department Chief Andrew Powers.

Dear Bobcat Community,

Late last night, Ohio University leadership was made aware of disturbing anti-Semitic words and images painted on and around the graffiti wall on the Athens campus.  Anti-Semitism is not tolerated on our campuses and does not reflect our steadfast commitment to diversity and inclusion. We condemn antisemitism and all bigotry as a direct contradiction of our values.

This morning, it appears that another individual or group exercising their own free speech rights has since repainted these portions of the graffiti wall as they are no longer visible. 

Our commitment to freedom of expression means that the University does not shield its community from speech even when it is offensive and disturbing, as in this case. AsBobcats, it is our responsibility to care for and treat each other with compassion and dignity.
