The Nursing Program at Ohio University Southern recently recognized 32 students who completed the Associate Degree Nursing program this summer. The ADN graduates participated in a traditional pinning ceremony at the Bowman Auditorium on the Ironton Campus.
Mashawna Hamilton, MSN, RN, associate director of the Nursing Education Program at Southern, said the students worked very hard to attain their degrees.
“These students have overcome numerous personal obstacles within the group and all the while pursued excellence,” Hamilton said.
Two students were awarded special accolades for their academic achievements during the program. Tiffany Copley of Scottown, Ohio, was recognized with the Outstanding Nursing Student (Highest GPA) in the summer 2018 cohort. David (Matt) Stapleton of Raceland, Kentucky, was honored with the Spirit of Nursing Award.
“The entire group has worked cohesively and supported each other throughout their time in the program,” Hamilton said.
Co-keynote speakers at the pinning ceremony were Hallie Cook and Carly Salyers, both Southern Campus 2017 ADN graduates. The pair were selected to share their first-year nursing practice experiences to the graduating class, which included their sisters, Bradleigh Cook and Kelsy Riley.
Hamilton said the selection of siblings for the keynote address upholds “family members who follow the paths of their loved ones into (nursing), creating a rich Southern Campus Nursing legacy.”
Hamilton said Southern has had many family groups come through the nursing programs, including mothers and daughters, sisters, brothers and sisters and husbands and wives.
