Facilitating Career Development Faculty Learning Community accepting applications
A 2019 Faculty Learning Community (FLC) will help faculty and academic advisors identify opportunities for enhancing confidence and skills in leading career-related conversations with students in their discipline. Participants will learn how to actively engage students in career development discussions in the classroom and beyond.
“This FLC will help faculty articulate to students how the curriculum intersects with, and enhances, career development,” said Imants Jaunarajs, assistant dean of students in the Career and Leadership Development Center (CLDC). “This engaging experience will provide participants with tactical approaches to incorporate career readiness elements into teaching and learning.”
Sponsored by the Office of Instructional Innovation and the CLDC, the Facilitating Career Development FLC will most benefit faculty who are advising students academically, advising student organizations, or those directly supervising student employees or research assistants.
By the end of fall semester 2019, participants will:
- Identify a personal strategy to intentionally engage students in career planning and development
- Communicate examples of when to help students connect with other campus resources
- Review successful career readiness strategies from other disciplines
- Engage with and learn from other experienced faculty
- Create an artifact demonstrating the value of a degree in their discipline
Tim Vickers, director of the Center for Teaching & Learning, will assist Jaunarajs and Lindsey Ward, associate director of the CLDC, with facilitating the FLC. Vickers will provide relevant resources and one-on-one consultations as needed.
Participants will meet once a month throughout the spring and fall of 2019; the group will be limited to 12 members. All accepted participants who attend 80 percent of the FLC meetings will receive $1,000 in funding to support professional development related to the career development of students, or for marketing materials to promote career opportunities for students in your discipline.
