International Education Week to be celebrated Nov. 11-18

Ohio University will celebrate International Education Week (IEW) during the week of Nov. 11-18 with a series of special events on the Athens and regional campuses, including a conference focused on the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The International Dinner will kick off the week on Sunday, Nov. 11 beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Baker University Center Ballroom. Open to all students, faculty, staff and area residents, this event features international food, music and performances throughout the evening. The International Student Union coordinates all aspects of this entertaining evening, and tickets are still on sale at this link.

Tuesday, Nov. 13 will feature the IEW Photo Contest sponsored by the Office of Global Opportunities. The display of photos from this year’s contest will officially open at 10 a.m. in the Front Room at the Baker University Center.

Also, the Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education will begin its IEW events with a presentation on the college’s new partnership with the Instituto Federal do Triangulo Mineiro (ITM) in Uberaba, Brazil. That special event will begin at 1:00 p.m. in McCracken Seminar Room, 328.

The college’s events will continue throughout the week with a series of workshops, panel discussion and other activities on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. This IEW web page provides a full schedule for the IEW events sponsored by the Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education.

The Ohio University- Zanesville campus will begin its slate of activities on Tuesday with a series of Global Voices Presentations on topics including “The Media Construction of Identity of Anti-Immigration Discourse” and “Perspectives of International Service,” along with an International Sports and Recreation event. The Ohio University – Lancaster Campus will also kick off its events on Tuesday with the “Food, Film and Fun 101: Food of France” activity beginning at noon in the Bobcat Bistro in Brasee Hall. The campus will host additional events featuring Spain and Turkey on Wednesday and Thursday. A full schedule of events can be found on the IEW website.

On Wednesday, Nov. 14 The United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Higher Education conference, coordinated by the Center for International Studies, will begin. The aim of the two-day conference is to critically evaluate the intentionality, viability and actualization of the SDGs and to stimulate the articulation of research questions and curricular opportunities.

The conference will feature several expert panels on topics related to the SDGs, and will include an alumni panel at 3:05 p.m. in Baker 240 that will be made up of:

Also on Wednesday, Nov. 14, the annual Global Engagement Awards Gala will be held in the Baker University Center Ballroom beginning at 5 p.m. The event celebrates the excellence in global engagement shown by faculty, staff, alumni and community members. The event also honors a faculty member from Chubu University in Japan for excellence in global engagement. Those who cannot attend the Gala are invited to watch a livestream of the events here.

On Thursday, Nov. 15, the conference will continue and include a Keynote Luncheon by Ohio University Professor John Sabraw. The event will begin at noon in the Baker University Center Ballroom. The luncheon is free and open to everyone.

Artist activist Sabraw is working to return southeastern Ohio’s streams to the picture of health. He has partnered with Dr. Guy Riefler, Professor of Civil Engineering at Ohio University to extract toxic acid mine drainage (AMD) from polluted streams and turn it into paint pigment. Once the pigment is sold on a commercial scale, revenue will be invested back into the streams’ remediation.

The IEW Keynote Speech, which was to be presented by Erin Huber on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m., has been cancelled. The Office of Global Affairs is working with Huber to reschedule her appearance at Ohio University.
