Campus rec offering variety of activities this spring

From backpacking at the Red River Gorge to doing the luau on ice, Ohio University’s Campus Recreation has something for everyone this spring semester.  

Campus Recreation, housed in the Charles J. Ping Recreation Center, includes an aquatic center, ice rink, recreation center, golf course, a tennis center and a fieldhouse. The department aims to promote the physical, emotional and social growth of OHIO students by engaging them in the department’s numerous recreational facilities and programs.

Upcoming events and dates to remember

Midnight Meltdown Pajama Party: 10:30 p.m. until midnight on Feb. 16 at Bird Arena

Get cozy in your favorite pajamas during this Midnight Meltdown recreation skate. These sessions take place on select Saturday nights after D1 hockey games throughout the winter months. There is a Hawaiian Luau themed Midnight Meltdown on March 2.

Intramural sports, spring 2 registration opens on Feb. 25

Sports offered include 11v11 soccer, indoor 4v4 flag football, kickball, handball, team tennis, 2v2 sand volleyball and golf.

Red River Gorge backpacking trip from March 1 through March 3

Discover canyon systems, rock shelters, waterfalls and natural bridges over 100 natural stone arches. Hike up hills that are not for the faint of heart. This trip will expand your outdoor skills alongside your fellow Bobcats. This trip includes gear, such as sleeping pads, tents, pots and pans, backpacks; transportation; food; and instructors. There is limited availability.  

Women’s spring break canoe trip from March 9 through March 17

Join fellow woman Bobcats for a road trip to Florida, where they will be canoeing down the Suwannee River and camping in the backcountry. Transportation, gear and instruction are included; no prior camping or canoeing experience is necessary. There is limited availability.

Appalachian Trail spring break backpacking trip from March 9 through March 15

Spend your spring break with Outdoor Pursuits on a fun and exciting backpacking trip along the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania and Maryland along the oldest long-distance hiking trail in the United States. Participants will be taught how to backcountry cook, camp and navigate the trail while they form new relationships with others. The trip cost includes camping and backpacking equipment, food, transportation and instruction; there is limited availability.

Seneca Creek backpacking from March 22 through March 24

The cost of this trip includes all camping and backpacking equipment, food, transportation and instruction; there is limited availability.

OHIO Open Tennis Tournament on March 23 and March 24

The sixth bi-annual OHIO Open Tennis Tournament will include men’s open singles, women’s open singles, men’s open doubles, women’s open doubles and mixed open doubles. Register online at www.recshop.ohio.edu.

Grayson Highland backpacking from March 29 through March 31 and April 12 through April 14

Learn or expand upon your outdoor skills while enjoying the peacefulness of the most beautiful section of the Appalachian Trail in Virginia with the company of fellow Bobcats. Trip cost includes gear, food, transportation and instruction; there is limited availability.

Bouldering Day Trip from noon until 4 p.m. on March 31

Outdoor Pursuits staff will teach participants how to boulder, show them fun and challenging climbs and educate them on climbing safety. The day trip fee includes lunch, bouldering gear, instruction and transportation; there is limited availability.

Waking Up in the 80’s: Spring Ice Show from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Bird Arena

This ice show is a part of Mom’s Weekend and is presented by OHIO’s Synchronized Skating Team and Bird Arena’s Learn to Skate program.

Medicinal Plant Hike on April 20

Join Outdoor Pursuits for a light hike and learn about various edible plants, their medicinal properties and what they can do for you when you eat them. There is limited availability.
