Ohio University Press children’s titles named finalists for 2019 Book Awards

Two Ohio University Press children’s books are finalists for 2019 Ohioana Book Awards. The books are Carole Miller Genshaft’s "Aminah’s World: An Activity Book and Children’s Guide about Artist Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson", and Michelle Hout’s "Count the Wings: The Life and Art of Charley Harper."

Aminah Robinson was a mixed-media artist from Columbus whose artwork has been exhibited nationally. The mural on the ground floor of Ohio University’s Baker University Center—between the Admissions desk and Bobcat Depot—is based on Robinson’s sculptures. Genshaft’s picture book—beautifully designed in full color by the Columbus Museum of Art—introduces children to Aminah’s vibrant life and art in a fun, interactive style.

Charley Harper of Cincinnati was a beloved mid-century artist-illustrator, best known for his simple, colorful depictions of the natural world. "Count the Wings," written for a middle grade reading audience, is the first biography about Harper and his path to becoming a full-time “minimal realist” artist. The story is supplemented by 74 color photos and illustrations, and is part of Ohio University Press’s Biographies for Young Readers series.

First given in 1942, the Ohioana Book Awards are the second-oldest state literary prizes in the nation and honor outstanding works by Ohio authors and books about Ohio in five categories. Winners will be announced in July, and the 2019 Ohioana Book Awards will be presented at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus on Thursday, Oct. 17.
