Patton College to host third Black Lives Matter panel discussion on Sept. 28

The Patton College of Education is featuring the third panel discussion in its new Black Lives Matter Munch & Learn Series. “Advocacy & Allyship: Every Day, Not Just When it is Trending” will be held on Monday, Sept. 28, from noon to 1:30 p.m.

#BlackLivesMatter, #SayHerName, and #RacialJustice have all become popular hashtags, but what does advocacy and allyship look like every day? This session will discuss active allyship and challenge participants to recognize and speak up against racism. Panelists will discuss anti-racist activism on our campus and in our community.

The panel features Brandi Baker, co-founder, Athens Parents for Racial Equality; Tyrone Carr, director, Alumni Diversity Initiatives/Racial Equity Coalition of Athens; Dr. Winsome Chunnu, director, Diversity and Inclusion; and Dr. Sarah Garlington, assistant professor, Department of Social Work/Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ).

Take-aways include:

• Identify microaggressions and have strategies for addressing them in the moment
• Articulate the difference between performative and active allyship
• Gain insight into community organizations that are advocating for anti-racist communities and schools

The previous session, held on Sept. 14, is available on The Patton College’s YouTube channel. “The Black Male Experience: Academic and Professional Worlds” featured a panel of African American males who shared challenges and strategies in navigating their professional lives. The panel also discussed anti-racist behaviors they would have valued to help them succeed rather than block their academic and professional trajectory.

The Black Lives Matter Munch & Learn series is open to Ohio University and the community and will be hosted on Microsoft Teams Live. It will be recorded for those who cannot participate live and posted on The Patton College’s YouTube channel.
