Cybersecurity Awareness Month concludes: Examining the future of devices

As part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Ohio University Information Technology is providing weekly guidance on how faculty, staff, and students can #BeCyberSmart. 

Internet connected devices are growing in use and popularity every day, but they may not always solve more problems than they cause. In fact, a smart device may not always be the “smart” choice for every situation. 

A device is generally defined as “smart” when it becomes connected to the internet. These devices are collectively known as the Internet of Things (IoT) and range from thermostats to refrigerators to baby monitors. Enabling these devices to connect to the internet can increase their functionality, but it also comes with caveats that should be taken into consideration before making a purchase.
