Patton College features student voices in Black Lives Matter series panel discussion Nov. 16

The Patton College of Education is hosting the seventh panel discussion in its Black Lives Matter Munch & Learn Series. “Anti-racism on Campus: Lifting Student Voices” will be held on Monday, Nov. 16, from noon to 1:30 p.m.

This Microsoft Teams live session highlights the perspectives of today’s undergraduate students on the issue of racism in society today. The diverse group of student panelists will describe their perspectives in regard to race, and they will discuss ways in which their views and commitments have been shaped by their college experiences. 

The panel features Stephen Barrett, senior in Retail Fashion Merchandising; Randi Bateman, senior in Middle Childhood Education; Camilla Hibbard, junior in Mild to Moderate Educational Needs; and Mylun Jackson, senior in Communications. The moderator is Marcquis Parham, assistant director of career and leadership development, and the convener is Dr. Peter Mather, professor and department chair, Counseling and Higher Education.

Take-aways include:

• Gain an understanding of how undergraduate students are making meaning of racism in society and on campus.
• Gain an understanding of the kinds of curricular and co-curricular experiences that have a positive influence on students’ perspectives on race.
• Develop plans for effective anti-racism initiatives in the classrooms and on campus.
• Gain an understanding of how to have effective conversations with undergraduate students on issues of race and racism.

All previous sessions are available on The Patton College’s YouTube channel, including the most recent session held on Nov. 9. “The (Mis)Representation of People of Color in Research” featured a panel that discussed how People of Color are represented, or misrepresented, in research. Panel members shared experiences where they have been asked to alter parts of their identity for their research and/or how they intentionally honored the identities of People of Color through their work.

The Black Lives Matter Munch & Learn series is open to Ohio University and the community and will be hosted on Microsoft Teams Live. It will be recorded for those who cannot participate live and posted on The Patton College’s YouTube channel.
