Patton College to host second discussion in new series, Global Issues on Immigration

Ohio University’s Patton College of Education is featuring the second panel discussion in its new Munch and Learn Series: Global Issues on Immigration. “Honoring the Experiences of Immigrant Populations in Research and Scholarship” will be held on Monday, March 8, from noon to 1:30 p.m.

The virtual Microsoft Teams presentation features a panel that will discuss how we honor the experiences of immigrant populations in research and scholarship. In this session, researchers will discuss how to gain entrée and build trust within the community, bringing immigrants’ experiences to the foreground. Various theoretical frameworks that can stimulate thinking about immigrant-focused research will be discussed, as well as appropriate types of research design.

The panel features Dr. Bhaskar Upadhyay, associate professor, Curriculum & Instruction, University of Minnesota; Dr. Emmanuel Jean Francois, associate professor, Educational Studies; and Dr. Mike Kopish, associate professor, Teacher Education. The moderator of the discussion is Dr. Dwan Robinson, associate professor and department chair, Educational Studies; and the convener is Dr. Sara Helfrich, senior associate dean for research and graduate studies.

Take-aways include:

  • Learn about the importance of building trust between researchers and participants
  • Understand the importance of bringing immigrants' experiences to the foreground
  • Begin to understand various types of research designs used in this type of work, such as participatory action research and micro-ethnographic/discourse analysis, and why they are appropriate
  • Enjoy a discussion of theoretical frameworks that can help us think about immigrant-focused research (e.g., transformative theories, critical theories, Freire, Gee)

The first session in the series, “Immigrant Experiences: Families, Careers, and Communities,” is available on The Patton College’s YouTube channel, as will the March 8 video recording and future series discussions as they become available.

The Global Issues on Immigration Munch and Learn Series is open to Ohio University and the community.
