Juedes, Koonce named associate deans for Russ College of Engineering and Technology

Moss Professor of Engineering and Russ College Dean Mei Wei has announced the appointment of Dr. David Juedes to serve as associate dean of academics for the Russ College of Engineering and Technology, effective immediately. Wei has also announced the appointment of Dr. David Koonce to serve as associate dean of research and graduate education in the college, effective Aug. 16. Koonce will serve in this role until a national search for the position concludes.

These appointments follow the announcement that Dr. Deb McAvoy and Dr. Shawn Osterman will return to their teaching roles for the fall semester.

Juedes has been a faculty member in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science since 1994 and has served as chair of the school since 2010. Koonce has been a faculty member in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) since 1993, and currently serves as the associate dean of the Graduate College and associate vice president for research.

“Both Drs. Juedes and Koonce bring a tremendous amount of leadership experience and enthusiasm to these roles,” said Dean Wei. “Their dedication to students, academic track records, and collaborative approaches are incredibly valuable as the Russ College continues to strategically grow.”

Juedes has held various relevant administrative and leadership roles at Ohio University during his 27-year tenure at the institution. In addition to serving as chair of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, which is the largest academic unit within the Russ College of Engineering and Technology, he has also held various University leadership roles outside of the college. Juedes served on the Graduate Council for six years, serving as chair from 2007 to 2009. Most recently, he served on the executive committee of the Chairs and Directors Council from 2018 to 2020 and was chair from 2019 to 2020.

Koonce has also held several leadership roles at the University over the last 28 years. After joining the Russ College, he served as director of the Master of Engineering Management for eight years and was instrumental in helping the program transition to an online format. He also served as graduate chair for ISE. Since 2012, he has served in various capacities including associate dean and interim dean of the Graduate College, interim vice president for Research & Creative Activity, and associate vice president for Research.

“I’d like to thank Dr. McAvoy and Dr. Osterman for their leadership and support over the years,” said Dean Wei. “They have laid a solid foundation for our new associate deans to build from and I look forward to continued work with our college leaders, faculty, and staff to provide outstanding opportunities for our students that prepare them for incredible career opportunities.”

A search to name a new chair of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is ongoing.
