OHIO alumna recognized nationally by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association

Ohio University alumna Dr. Georgia Malandraki has been recognized as a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (2021). This honor is in recognition of her many significant contributions to the field of Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders. She enjoys strong recognition both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Malandraki graduated from OHIO with her master's in Speech-Language Pathology, School of Hearing-Speech-Language Sciences in 2004. She completed her doctorate in Speech and Hearing Science with a focus in Swallowing Disorders and Neuroscience at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and then a post-doctoral fellowship at the Department of Medicine of the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Dr. Malandraki is an Associate Professor in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences and a courtesy appointment in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University. Dr. Malandraki’s research program aims to identify the central and peripheral neural mechanisms of swallowing function, with an ultimate aim to develop evidence-based treatments for children and adults with neurogenic swallowing disorders.

She is one of the pioneers in the effort to develop evidence-based telehealth practice for diagnosing and treating swallowing disorders. She is a strong advocate for the field of swallowing disorders in Greece, her home country, where she is establishing the first epidemiological database on swallowing disorders with an aim to improve training and rehabilitation for such disorders. Her work has been continuously funded by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders and the American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine.
