OHIO Hockey announces Lionel Mauron as head coach

Ohio University Men’s Ice Hockey announced Lionel Mauron as the head coach for the 2021 season. Mauron signed a one-year contract and takes over for Cole Bell as the 15th head coach in program history.

“We are excited to welcome Lio to the full-time role,” said Mark Ferguson, associate dean of students for well-being and executive director of university well-being and recreation. “His commitment to supporting our student-athletes on and off the ice, combined with his hockey experience made him a model choice for OHIO Hockey.”

Mauron spent the 2020-21 season as a graduate assistant with OHIO Hockey while working towards a degree in coaching education, taking the Bobcats to the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division 1 National Tournament as the fourth seed.

I look forward to immersing myself in the local community and working with our Blue Line Booster Club to provide an exciting experience to our players and our fans,” Mauron said. “I am eager to get to work to bring back a national championship to Athens.”

Mauron played NCAA Division 3 Hockey for Curry College, serving as a team captain during his senior year. He was the first European to play for the program and led the team in points.

Following his collegiate career, Mauron signed a professional contract with the Jacksonville Icemen in the ECHL. He joined the Bobcats after spending a year in the Southern Professional Hockey League with the Knoxville Ice Bears.

OHIO Hockey will return to Bird Ice Arena on Sept. 18 for the intrasquad Green and White game. For more information on OHIO Hockey or tickets visit www.ohiobobcathockey.com.
