Recognizing National Hazing Prevention Week at OHIO

The following message was shared with all OHIO students and employees on Sept. 21, 2021.

Dear Bobcats,

This is National Hazing Prevention week, which presents an opportunity for the Ohio University community to come together and raise awareness about this pervasive national issue.

The safety and security of our students is an obligation we take very seriously. We are committed to working with our student organizations to help ensure that they are engaging in behaviors and practices that are in alignment with University policies and expectations.

Every member of our University community is responsible for the prevention of hazing. Each organization, as well as each individual, must accept the personal obligation to uphold the basic community values of citizenship, civility, character, community, and commitment.

In the coming week, all OHIO students, faculty, and staff will receive an email link to participate in a new hazing education and prevention module. This required module will provide critical information and resources to help each of us be better bystanders. Please be sure to watch your Catmail for additional information about this new requirement.  I also want everyone in our University community to be aware of OHIO’s hazing policy and how to report hazing

For hazing to stop, it must be recognized and reported. As such, our University continuously works to increase safeguards against hazing, expands the ways for students to report potential hazing and educates students on the importance of making those reports. All reported incidents of hazing are reviewed and, when appropriate, investigated; all individuals involved in hazing are subject to both criminal and/or University conduct proceedings.

Hazing can be physically and emotionally harmful. There are available resources if you need support or medical attention as the result of hazing activities.

Sincerely,
Hugh Sherman
President
