Scripps College of Communication to offer online crisis communication workshop Oct. 30

The Scripps College of Communication will offer an online crisis communication workshop Oct. 30, led by former Ohio Department of Public Safety director John Born. The workshop will count as one credit in the crisis communication online graduate certificate.

"After 32 years of experience in communication and leadership positions during crises, I can absolutely attest that internal organizational and external stakeholder communication in a crisis is the most important factor in reducing crisis risk and increasing positive outcomes,” Born said. “The crisis communication certificate program offered by the Scripps College is uniquely able to prepare students to successfully communicate before, during, and after a crisis by blending real-world application and academic principles."

The workshop combines direct instruction, guest speakers, and hands-on exercises. Participants select an organization and develop a crisis communication outline for it. Past attendees have chosen to use their employers, places of worship or philanthropic organizations.

Josh Holder, a public communications coordinator in Seminole, Florida, participated in the workshop as a student in the crisis communication graduate certificate.

"The workshop provided an expert clinic in the fundamentals of crisis communication,” Holder said. “The instructors translated the content into real-world products we could incorporate into our organizations.”

The workshop functions as the first component in the crisis communication graduate certificate; participants will earn one credit hour toward the certificate regardless of whether they enroll in the certificate.

“The workshop stands firmly on its own in the value it brings to professionals, and prospective certificate students will find incomparable value in the introduction of concepts that will follow them throughout the program," Holder said.
