Organization Spotlight: 1804 Communication

Gaining real world and hands-on experiences is something that many students seek during their college years, no matter what field they are looking to work in. 1804 Communication is the perfect place for advertising, public relations, and marketing students to attain these experiences in a student led environment. 1804 Communication is Ohio University’s leading student-run integrated marketing and communications firm. The organization works with local and national clients to help them reach their marketing and communication goals through campaigns created by teams within the firm. Some of their clients include Court Street Coffee, Go Bus, The Athens County Humane Society, The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, and many more.

1804 Communication consists of five teams - research & strategy, internal operations, business development, creative services, and client services. If you’re looking for experience in analytics and the numbers behind campaign development, check out the research team. Internal relations plan different events for members to participate in and manages the firm’s website and social media accounts. The business development team focuses on pitching to clients and recruiting new ones. Client services serve as the liaison between the firm and client, making sure all of the clients’ advertising objectives are being met. The campaigns are produced and designed by creative services. The organization has a place for every student interested in communications and marketing and they are seeking to recruit new members with experience in videography, photography, fashion, media, and more!

Majoring in communication studies with minors in advertising and PR, marketing, and a certificate in social media, senior Elise Semko values the experiences and knowledge she has gained about this industry through 1804 Communication.

“1804 is an awesome way to gain hands-on experience with real life clients while also creating friendships with people who inspire you both personally and professionally,” says Semko.

She said she has met some of her closest friends through 1804 Communication and encourages students from all majors to apply.

“Having a valuable takeaway from college that I can talk about in interviews” is one of the reasons why Semko said she loves being a part of 1804 Communication and wants more students to step out of their comfort zone and join the organization.
