OHIO to host presentation by gender, race and violence activist Jackson Katz
Ohio University’s Women’s Center and Sorority and Fraternity Life present “The Macho Paradox: Why Some Men Hurt Women and How All Men Can Help – An Evening with Dr. Jackson Katz.” This event will take place Tuesday, March 29, at 6 p.m.
Katz is an educator, filmmaker and author. He is a global thought leader who is renowned for his pioneering scholarship and activism on issues of gender, race and violence. Katz has delivered lectures and conducted trainings in all 50 states, eight Canadian provinces, and every continent except Antarctica.
"The Women's Center is pleased to have Dr. Katz join the Ohio University community this Women's History Month for this important conversation,” said MaryKathyrine Tran, interim director of the Women’s Center. “Oftentimes, we see folks asking what men's role in violence prevention work can or should look like. My hope is that this discussion with Dr. Katz will provide action steps and tangible ways to work in active allyship with those already doing the work here on campus and throughout the community."
Katz co-founded Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP), one of the longest-running and most widely influential gender violence prevention programs in North America. MVP has been implemented by college athletic programs, professional sports teams, and NASCAR. MVP introduced the “bystander” approach to the sexual assault and relationship abuse fields.
Katz created and directed the first worldwide gender violence prevention program in the history of the U.S. Marine Corps. He and his colleagues have been centrally involved in the development and implementation of system-wide gender violence prevention training in the U.S. Air Force and Navy.
“The Office of Health Promotion is excited to co-sponsor and support this event as Jackson Katz is a powerful voice in the anti-violence field,” said Ann Brandon, associate director of prevention and education for the Office of Health Promotion. “His evidence-based bystander approaches are fused with addressing root causes and calling on men as part of the solution to create a culture that does not tolerate any form of violence. I look forward to extending the conversations and hope we can generate energy around proactive bystander approaches.”
Katz is also the author of two critically acclaimed books, “The Macho Paradox: Why Some Men Hurt Women and How all Men Can Help,” and “Man Enough? Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and the Politics of Presidential Masculinity.” His work has been adapted into several acclaimed educational documentaries and created the award-winning Tough Guise documentary film series.
The Macho Paradox will be hosted virtually via Microsoft Teams. You can register for this event here.
