Cameron named Ohio University Regional Campus Accessibility Coordinator
Heather Cameron was recently named accessibility coordinator at Ohio University Lancaster, Eastern, and Zanesville regional campuses.
In her position, Cameron reviews documentation and determines eligibility according to the framework of the Americans with Disabilities Act for three campuses. She also coordinates accommodations, helping students in identifying technology or equipment to assist with learning, and connects students with disabilities to the most relevant campus resources. In addition, she works with faculty if questions or concerns arise with implementation of a student’s accommodations.
“From a young age, my dad emphasized the value of education, encouraging me to never stop learning, Cameron said. “I use this concept in my everyday life and encourage others to do the same. That is why I feel the best part of being an accessibility coordinator is helping students knock down walls during their academic journey.”
Cameron’s counseling style is intuitive and friendly. She utilizes empathetic listening skills to develop and enhance relationships with students to build a stronger understanding of what is being conveyed, both intellectually and emotionally.
The mission of Student Accessibility Services (SAS) is to ensure equal opportunity and access for members of the Ohio University community. Central to this mission is the development of an academic environment that is accessible to all people without the need for adaptation. While working toward the goal of full inclusion, accommodations must still be provided on an individual basis.
“Stay positive and enjoy every minute of college, both the good and the challenging times,” Cameron advises students.
