Fall Grad Spotlight: Xiaorui Sun

Xiaorui Sun is graduating from the Patton College of Education with her Ph.D. in instructional technology. She has accepted a position as a learning technologist in the Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

What are your next steps or plans for the future?
I recently joined the Sheridan Center on the Digital Learning and Design team at Brown University. I look forward to contributing to my field with research and best practices. 

What memory stands out from your time at OHIO?
I enjoyed my stay at Ohio University. The welcome of the global culture, the diversity (students from various countries), the care for students, the support from different departments and sectors such as the mentoring program from Women’s Center. Also, the vibrant campus cultural events, like the International Dinner, all made my memories of OHIO pleasant. 

Why did you choose OHIO? 
Initially, Dr. Greg Kessler’s research and his work in different countries was of great interest to me. I knew that’s what I wanted to do, follow his research and continue providing support for teacher education around the world with technology integration research and best practices.

Who were your favorite professors and how did they make an impact on your life?
The professors and staff at OU have been very helpful in my growth in a variety of ways. It took a village to raise a Ph.D. I give credit to all who have supported me and made an impact on me as a professional and a person. 

What was the hardest hill you had to climb (not counting Jeff Hill) at OHIO? And how did you overcome challenges or obstacles in your path?
The dissertation writing process was challenging. In addition to my committee, the support from my family, my friends and the former Graduate Writing Center were of great help. I appreciate all of them who contributed to my success. 

What are your favorite OHIO memories?
There are many fond memories: having coffee with my friends weekly at the local bakery, meeting new colleagues, running and biking on the bike path, singing in the chorus, visiting the public library, etc.

What’s the one thing you would tell a new OHIO student not to miss?
Try to get involved in all campus activities that you are interested in, especially ones from different cultures/countries. It will broaden your horizons and help you develop a better understanding of humanity, who you are and whom you want to be.
