Fall Grad Spotlight: Shania Huffman

Shania Huffman, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in music production from the School of Media Arts and Studies, is preparing for a career in Los Angeles.

What are your next steps or plans for the future? 
After attending the OHIO-in-LA program this summer, I am planning on moving out to Los Angeles, California, in order to build a solid foundation for the rest of my career in music/media. I’m open to work in film and post sound, and I am hoping to get hired at an independent recording studio. 

What memory stands out from your time at OHIO? 
My first semester here, I remember my best friend visiting from out of town for the first time (she was attending college at OSU). We had talked about her visiting and how fun it would be when I had gotten accepted to OHIO. We went to the Kennedy Museum of Art, we listened to “Cruel Summer” by Taylor Swift, and we went out on Court Street for the first time later that evening. Being a college student was new and the area was still new – I think the newness of it all is what made that day so special. “Cruel Summer” still makes me nostalgic for that afternoon.

Why did you choose OHIO? 
I chose OHIO because it was the only university I could find in the state of Ohio that offered a four-year bachelor’s degree in music production. 

Who were your favorite professors and how did they make an impact on your life? 
All of the professors in the Music Production track were incredible, but Roger Cooper honestly changed the trajectory of my life by giving me the opportunity to participate in the OHIO-in-LA program this summer. That program fundamentally changed me as a person, and it gave me the opportunity to form a community and explore Los Angeles without the commitment of a long lease and while being surrounded by other like-minded people. I built professional relationships, and my time there constantly pushed me out of my comfort zone. I am forever grateful for his belief in me, and for all of the music production professors believing in me. 

What’s the one thing you would tell a new OHIO student not to miss? 
Ohio University is transformative in more ways than just academically. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to get out of your comfort zone and grow as a person. Go on the programs and do things that scare you, things you never thought you were capable of doing. Have experiences just to say you had them and don’t forget why you’re here.
