Center for Teaching, Learning and Assessment to host workshops, book groups, special events in spring semester
The Center for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment (CTLA) will host a wide range of programs and activities during the spring semester for OHIO faculty and staff. Here is information on several of the upcoming events.
Ramp up to instruction during Jan. 13 workshops
CTLA and its collaborators have come together to offer OHIO instructors two extended workshops that give them the time and space to review and refine aspects of their spring semester courses before the first day of class. Both workshops are scheduled for Friday, Jan. 13.
- Ramp Up to Instruction: A Workshop to (Re)consider Spring 2023 Courses focuses on instructors who have been teaching classes for several years and would like to consider valuable adjustments or refinements to course and instructional design.
- Ramp Up to Instruction: An Introduction to Teaching and Learning at OHIO is designed for new instructors and graduate student instructors teaching for the first (or second) time as an introduction to evidence-based instructional practices supporting effective teaching in OHIO learning contexts and supporting resources.
Book groups
CTLA invites OHIO instructors to join two book groups during the spring 2023 semester.
- Engaging in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: A Guide to the Process, and How to Develop a Project from Start to Finish: This book group is offered to OHIO faculty and staff who are interested in a clear, straightforward and brief guide for developing a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) project. It will be facilitated by Yuchun Zhou, associate professor in educational research and evaluation, education studies, Patton College of Education, and Melinda Rhodes-DiSalvo, executive director, CTLA.
- Learn more about success mindsets: Mindset research impacts our thinking (decision-making and problem-solving), learning (and development), behavior (and performance), and even our well-being. OHIO faculty are invited to join the Business Bobcat Teaching Brigade (BBTB) Learning Community and the CTLA to explore personal success mindsets as well as how this topic might be incorporated into classes, centers, certificates, and professional organizations across campus.
Digital Games-based Faculty Learning Community
This spring’s Digital Games-based Faculty Learning Community has two remaining spots. Instructors who would like to join this FCL should fill out this interest form. The next FLC proposal deadline is April 4, and proposals may be submitted at this website.
Additional workshops and available consultations
Early-semester workshops for OHIO faculty also include a Blackboard Course Tune-up (Jan. 19), Why Won’t They Engage? Understanding Learner Motivation (Jan. 24), Designing Transparent Assignments and Rubrics to Grade Them (Jan. 25), and Leveraging Early-semester Formative Feedback to Support Instruction (Jan. 26). In addition, CTLA offers consultations available to faculty interested in making instructional adjustments based on student feedback. Instructors interested in one-on-one consultations should fill out this form so they can be connected with an educational developer, instructional designer, or other resource person.
CTLA seeking associate directors
CTLA is currently accepting applications for two associate directors, one to lead assessment collaborations and one to focus on faculty programs. Application deadline is in early February. Please share these opportunities with your networks and/or faculty developers you may know. This is a wonderful opportunity to help envision the future of the newly relaunched center.
