Ohio University to celebrate Women’s History Month
OHIO’s Division of Diversity and Inclusion and Women’s Center will join nationwide efforts to uplift the experiences of women throughout the month of March.
“OHIO has a rich history of supporting and celebrating the success of women,” said Women’s Center Director Dr. Chris Fowler. “We are excited to invite the University community to celebrate this year's Women's History Month. During the celebration, and always, the Women's Center is focused on shining a spotlight on the women that impact us here at OHIO and around the world.”
This year’s national theme for Women’s History Month was designated by the National Women’s History Alliance as “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories.” This theme aims to recognize women who have made an impact in media and storytelling, including print, radio, TV, stage, screen, blogs, podcasts, news and social media.
Women’s History Month anchor events, hosted by OHIO’s Women’s Center, include:
Empower HER
This event will kick off OHIO’s Women’s History Month on Saturday, March 4 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Multicultural Center. This day of empowerment and networking is hosted in collaboration with Woman to Woman, Ebony Minds, Unified Sisters, International Student Union, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and Graduate Student Senate. Be sure to register if you plan on attending.
Women in Finance Panel
On Monday, March 6, join the Women’s Center for a discussion with the Association of Women in Finance. Hear financial professionals at J.P. Morgan and Nationwide speak about the challenges and opportunities facing women in finance with a live Q&A. The event will take place from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in Copeland Hall Room 104.
Film Screening - Trailblazing Women in Ohio Politics
The Athena Cinema will screen the documentary “Trailblazing Women in Ohio Politics” on Tuesday, March 7 at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free to view the film and will include a panel discussion featuring Nancy P. Hollister, former Lieutenant Governor of Ohio, from Marietta, and Debbie Phillips, former member of the Ohio House of Representatives, from Athens. Bowling Green State University Political Science Professor Melissa K. Miller, expert on American politics, will moderate the panel.
International Women's Day Panel
Wednesday, March 8 is International Women’s Day. The Ohio University Pan-African Alumni Network and the Women’s Center are hosting a virtual women’s panel consisting of OHIO alumnae who are serving in academic leadership roles throughout the world. The “Embracing Equity: Black Women in Academia” panel will take place from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Real Talk: "TERFs, Gender Critical Movements and Post-Fascist Feminisms"
Join the Women's Center on March 9 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. to discuss the "TERFs, Gender Critical Movements and Post-Fascist Feminisms" article written by Serena Bassi and Greta LaFleur. Join Dr. Myrna Sheldon and others to talk about the article and other pertinent topics, hosted in collaboration with the Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies program.
2023 Celebrate Women
The 2023 Celebrate Women event hosted at the OHIO Lancaster campus will take place on Friday, March. 24. The theme for the 17th anniversary of the event “Women Empowering Women.” This year’s keynote speaker is award-winning international ballroom dancer and choreographer Mary Murphy.
Women's History Month Wrap Up and Trivia Night
To conclude the 2023 Women’s History Month celebration, the Women’s Center will host a Women’s History Month Wrap Up and Trivia Night on Monday, March 27 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the Baker University Center fourth floor atrium. Come connect with the Women’s Center and learn about women’s history at Ohio University and nationwide.
The entire University community is invited to join participate in this month-long opportunity to learn more about women’s history and hear the stories of women at OHIO and beyond. Throughout March, facts about women’s history will be featured on digital screens across campus and available on drinks at the Front Room Coffeehouse in Baker University Center and at Court Street Coffee uptown.
