Senator Sherrod Brown honors E.W. Scripps School of Journalism centennial
According to U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, Ohio University produces some of the best-in-field leaders and instills free-press values essential for democracy. His accolades to the School of Journalism, among many others, are highlighted during the school’s centennial year.
“Scripps is rooted in the values essential for a democratic society, the values of truth, accuracy, and independence,” Senator Brown said in statement published in the Congressional Record on Feb. 9, 2023.
Classroom journalism instruction at Ohio University began in 1923. Throughout 2023, the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism is celebrating its centennial year with special events on campus and elsewhere. For its first centennial celebration event, the school sponsored a program on Jan. 26 featuring investigative reporters who covered the “Pandora Papers.”
“Scripps alums are leading their industries, whether it is broadcast, print or digital media. They are producing award-winning content, reporting at the national, state, and local level and delivering the stories that matter most to Ohioans and Americans,” said Senator Brown.
Ohio University’s tradition of excellence, the Senator added, is based on real-world experience combined with classroom instruction.
“The curriculum extends far outside of the classroom with student newspapers, internship opportunities, and student-run media platforms to ensure that students have the skills necessary to excel after graduation,” Senator Brown said in his published tribute. “I am proud that Scripps calls Ohio home, and I look forward to its next hundred years.”
Ohio University’s journalism school was named The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism in 1982, sharing a special bond with The E.W. Scripps Company and its philanthropic arm the Scripps Howard Foundation based in Cincinnati.
A Centennial Symposium will be held on OHIO’s Athens campus April 4-5, where alumni will discuss their time in the journalism school and their award-winning work across platforms at some of the leading news organizations and creative agencies in the nation. Additional celebrations are scheduled throughout 2023.
