Menard Family George Washington Forum hosts 'Do Markets Corrupt Our Morals?' on Oct. 3

The Menard Family George Washington Forum will host Ginny Choi discussing "Do Markets Corrupt Our Morals?" on Oct. 3, at 6 p.m. in the Baker Center Theater.

"Dr. Choi’s book, Do Markets Corrupt Our Morals?, is a valuable, thought-provoking contribution to an on-going conversation regarding the way in which commercial society influences our desires and dispositions. It gives the reader a history of the discussion going back to Rousseau, Montesquieu, Smith, Marx and others and builds on philosophical perspectives by taking a hard look at empirical evidence," said Cortney Rodet, director of the George Washington Forum and associate professor of economics in the College of Arts and Sciences at Ohio University.

"Conventional defenses of market systems that state that the moral costs of markets are worth the material gains are considered grossly insufficient for understanding our quality of life and the ‘Great Enrichment.’ The underlying debate remains topical, and Dr. Choi’s talk will offer food for thought for anyone interested in markets systems," Rodet noted.

At the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, Choi is a program director of Academic & Student Programs, a senior fellow with the F. A. Hayek Program for Advanced Study in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, and a senior research fellow. She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from George Mason University, an M.A. in Economics from New York University, and a B.A. in Economics from Emory University. She has also attended the General Course at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
