Ohio University to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated annually from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 to recognize and uplift the contributions of those of Hispanic descent and to celebrate Hispanic culture. Ohio University proudly recognizes National Hispanic Heritage Month through education, programming, and celebration. We aim to uplift those of Hispanic and Latinx heritage within our community throughout the month and year.

This year’s celebration is centered around the theme, "Latinos: Driving Prosperity, Power and Progress in America."  The theme aims to recognize the economic, political, and social contributions of the Hispanic and Latinx population in the United States.

Signature events throughout the month:

  • Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Intersectionality Reception: On Monday, Sept. 18, from 12 to 2 p.m., the LGBT Center will host a social and educational program to raise awareness about the presence of Latinx and Hispanic LGBTQ+ people. The workshop will serve as productive space for Latinx and Hispanic LGBTQ+ members to amplify their voices, speak about their experiences, and answer possible questions from other members of the community and allies. The event will be held in the 1804 Lounge of Baker University Center.
  • Hispanidad: A Tapestry Rich in Culture: An art exhibition by Vivian Estalella will open on Wednesday, Sept. 20, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Multicultural Center, located in Baker University Center Room 213. Estalella is a Cuban American artist whose work has been featured in the Smithsonian’s Friends of the National American Latino Museum and the Louvre Museum. Individuals interested in attending the opening of the exhibit are asked to register at this link. The exhibit will remain open for attendees to view following the opening event until Oct. 15.
  • Book Discussion of “Bananeras: Women Transforming the Banana Unions of Latin America:” Dana Frank’s book was selected as the month’s featured book for its insight into the Latin American women who are shaping and reimagining the possibilities of international labor solidarity. The book is available electronically to the OHIO community via the Ohio University Libraries. A thought-provoking discussion of the book will take place on Sept. 28, 2023, from 12 to 1:30 p.m. in the Women’s Center, located in Baker University Center Room 403. Participants can also join virtually and are asked to register to join at this website
