Return to work with purpose: Online master's in social work

Re-entering the workforce can an exciting time, full of new opportunities – and also challenges. For returning workers with a calling to help others, earning a master’s degree can be the key to personal and professional success.

Ohio University's online Master of Social Work (MSW) program prepares returning workers to start a new career that makes an immediate meaningful impact by advocating for underserved populations. The program is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and offers a comprehensive curriculum that prepares students to tackle social challenges head-on.

Why return to work with a master's in social work

The idea of returning to the workforce can be daunting, but there are compelling reasons to do so, especially with a master's in social work on your side.

Financial security: Returning to the workforce helps people achieve financial well-being and independence. According to a report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, social workers are in high demand, with employment projected to grow significantly faster than average over the next decade and expected to remain strong.

Increasing job opportunities: Social workers are a significant and growing part of the mental health workforce, with many serving as independent therapists. Licensure is necessary for independent practice, and a master's degree in social work from OHIO's accredited online program prepares you to achieve this goal.

Personal fulfillment: Serving America's most vulnerable citizens who lack equitable access to critical social services can offer a meaningful sense of purpose for those looking to work again. OHIO’s online MSW program prepares students to serve as clinical social workers in rural environments, with a focus on interdisciplinary collaboration and addressing social issues.

Foundation track: A part-time program with full-time results

The great news is a background in social work is not a prerequisite to completing a master’s degree. OHIO’s online MSW program includes a Foundations Track open to all eligible students with a bachelor’s degree in any major who want to begin a social work career. The part time program can be completed in as few as 10 semesters.

Assistant Professor of Instruction and Field Director Kelly Vacca has experience supporting students from diverse backgrounds succeed in Ohio's Online MSW Program.

“Students admitted to our program through our Foundation track often do not have a background in social work. Many are looking to change careers or further their current job but require a social work degree or specific licensure to advance or maintain their employment role,” said Vacca. “I spend much of my time meeting with students to help navigate program requirements, identify areas of interest and assist with locating Practicum sites, understand state licensure requirements, help answer questions, prepare for licensure exams, and provide general support to students as needed.”
