Dance team brings home awards from nationals

The School of Dance in the College of Fine Arts announces that its 2024 Dance Team has won second place in the Pom Division and ninth place in the Jazz Division in the Union College Classic National Competition. The university’s competitive dance team was also invited to perform at the Dance Battle for the first time, and secured their highest ever scores in both the Jazz and Pom divisions.

"This remarkable accomplishment showcases the strength and depth of our dance programs here at Ohio University," said Dean Matthew Shaftel. "It is a direct result of the innovative teaching and passionate learning that happen in our school every day. I am especially thankful for the leadership of Dr. Andrew Pueschel, who has helped to elevate the artistic work of our competitive dance team over the past few years."

Senior captain Olivia Balawender also shared her thoughts on the team's accomplishments.

"This experience has been transformative for all of us," Balawender said. "We want to thank our parents, alumni, faculty and everyone who helped us achieve our highest scores ever at nationals! Your support has fueled our passion for dance and I am beyond excited to see the team's motivation carry themselves better than ever to continue refining our skills in both the pom and jazz divisions."

This year's success was driven by an exceptional display of athleticism, artistry, and teamwork, positioning Ohio University at the forefront of collegiate competitive dance.

"Our team’s results reflect their hard work, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to excellence," said Pueschel, director of the dance team. "Seeing our Bobcats perform and excel on a national stage is profoundly rewarding."

In the wake of their celebrated performance, the School of Dance announces that auditions for the 2025 performance team are scheduled for Saturday, April 27, and Sunday, April 28, and that competition team auditions will be held early in the Fall semester and are open to all Ohio University students.
