Outstanding Graduate emphasizes importance of forging friendships

Kaitlyn Foster has been named an Outstanding Graduate of Ohio University Southern. Foster, who hails from Piketon, Ohio, has distinguished herself through her remarkable achievements in both academics and service.

Foster, who recently earned her Bachelor of Arts in Social Work, exemplifies the essence of dedication and perseverance. With a minimum grade point average of 3.5, active participation in University activities, extensive community service, and notable contributions, Foster has set herself apart as an exceptional student.

Reflecting on her journey, Foster shared her "ah-ha" moment, which occurred during her second year of college.

"I made close connections with my classmates and professors," she recalls. "I knew that with their support, I could reach my goals and pursue my educational dreams."

Choosing Ohio University was a decision rooted in proximity, affordability, and outstanding faculty.

"The college campus is close to home, the cost is reasonable, and the faculty are great to work with," Foster explained. Among the faculty members who left a profound impact on her academic and personal growth are Dr. Joy Shytle, Dr. Glenn Abraham, and Professor Tim Mollett.

"Dr. Shytle and Abraham supported me throughout my social work classes and taught me everything I know about the profession," Foster acknowledged gratefully. "Professor Mollett has impacted me with his enthusiasm for teaching the Spanish language and the kindness he has shown me as I navigate Spanish classes and social work classes simultaneously."

Despite facing challenges during her senior year, including juggling work, practicum, classes, and personal commitments, Foster persevered with unwavering determination.

"The hardest hill I had to climb during my education was senior year," she admits. "But I was able to do it with the support of my professors, friends, and family."

Amidst the rigors of academia, Foster cherishes the fond memories she created with her classmates.

"My favorite OHIO memories are the ones spent with my classmates," she reminisces. "Whether we were enjoying the Bobcat Blowout or studying after class, my college experience was so much better with them around."

Offering advice to future students, Foster emphasizes the importance of forging friendships and engaging in extracurricular activities.

"One thing I would tell future students not to miss is taking time to make friends and finding clubs to get involved in," she said.

Looking ahead, Foster is poised to continue her educational journey by pursuing a master’s degree in clinical social work. Her commitment to academic excellence, coupled with her compassionate spirit and dedication to serving others, ensures that Foster will continue to inspire and uplift those around her, leaving an indelible mark on the world.
