Scripps College accepting applications for New Young Alumni Council

Applications are now open for the new Scripps College Young Alumni Council. The council will support the future careers of current students while advancing the current careers for the council members.

“We've been talking about the need to form a council for engagement and feedback from successful recent alumni for several years,” said Scripps College Dean Scott Titsworth. “With the help of the Young Alumni Leaders program, we were able to really put some thought into this, and we plan to welcome our first cohort of the Scripps Young Alumni Council this August. I'm looking forward to leveraging this council to provide more mentoring opportunities for students and also to further develop young alumni to be industry leaders.”

The council will bring together a group of younger alumni from diverse industries and perspectives to provide advice, knowledge and feedback to current students on real-world situations through regular engagement. Through both virtual and in-person interactions, students will benefit from the expertise of young alumni.

“We feel the engagement with students is the crux of the Young Alumni Council,” said Scripps Director of Student Development Erin Roberts. “We know our students have a wide variety of information sources, but we have heard from them that they truly value hearing from young professionals who are closer to their age and understand the challenges and realities of young adulthood.”

Those who serve on the council will also gain professional development through contact with the college’s leadership and faculty on a variety of trends in the industry, as well as through contact with the Dean’s Advisory Council, a group of alumni and friends who are well established in their careers.

The Scripps Young Alumni Council initial cohort will meet August 2024 through April 2025. Members are expected to serve terms of two to four years, although council meetings will pause for the summer months. During this first year, two daylong sessions are mandatory and will be held in-person on the Ohio University campus in Athens, Ohio, in September and March. All other monthly sessions are virtual and will be held on the second Tuesday of every month (August, October, November, December, January, February and April) from 6-7 p.m. ET.  Participants must attend all sessions, both in-person and virtual. Each year, members can expect to commit approximately 20 hours with additional time for travel to the council.

“We are truly excited to launch the Scripps College Young Alumni Council because we know it will benefit both current students and young alumni,” said Dean Titsworth. “The council is open to Scripps College of Communication alumni who graduated 15 or less years ago. Twelve to fifteen alumni will be accepted into the inaugural 2024-2025 cohort, and we will continue to build the membership in the coming years.”

Applications are open until July 1. While there is no membership fee for the Scripps Young Alumni Council, members will pay for their own transportation and lodging in Athens for the September and March on-campus sessions. During the in-person professional development sessions, council members will receive catered meals.
