Scripps College grads win National Edward R. Murrow Awards
Several Scripps College of Communication alumni won prestigious 2024 National Edward R. Murrow Awards for their work in broadcasting, visual storytelling and graphic design.
The awards, announced in August, are named after a CBS news legend, and Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. More than 5,000 entries from hundreds of digital and broadcast network journalism organizations competed for the honors.
Jennifer Moore, BSJ ’07, a broadcast journalism major, was part of the team from KHOU TV in Houston, Texas, that was honored for their work on a special called Juneteenth 2023: The Freedom to Learn. Moore served as executive producer. The piece was recognized in the Large Market Television Excellence in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion category.
“It means a lot. Emmys are great, but Murrows are a chef’s kiss,” said Moore. “It’s so fulfilling, and it just made me feel like I have hit every goal I wanted to hit in my career. I’m grateful.”
Other winners from the Scripps College include Kevin Martin, MA ’07, and Erin Clark, a non-degree alumna, who both work in the photography department at the Boston Globe and studied in the visual communication graduate program; Boyzell Hosey, BSVC ’11, who works as a visual storytelling editor at independent nonprofit newsroom ProPublica and studied photojournalism; and Amanda Weisbrod, BSJ ’19, MA ’22, who works as a graphic designer at Radio Free Asia in Washington D.C. and studied journalism and visual communication.
RTDNA will honor the winners during the Edward R. Murrow Awards Gala on Oct. 14, 2024, at Gotham Hall in New York City.
