OHIO Men’s Ice Hockey announces Barry Schutte as head coach

Ohio University Men’s Ice Hockey announces Barry Schutte as the head coach for the 2024-25 season. Schutte signed a two-year contract and takes over for Lionel Mauron as the 16th head coach in program history.

"Barry brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the head coach position. OHIO Hockey is fortunate to have such a leader come on board as the program continues to compete for a national championship. We are excited for Barry to lead a talented roster and carry on the tradition of OHIO hockey," said Mark Ferguson, assistant vice president of OHIO Well-Being and Recreation.

Schutte spent the last five years at Miami University as the associate head hockey coach (2019-2024). He significantly contributed to the program's development on and off the ice. Under his leadership, the RedHawks saw improvements in key areas despite challenging seasons. In 2022-23, Miami achieved notable wins against top teams, while 22 players earned NCHC All-Academic honors. In Schutte's first season, he helped Miami improve offensively, ranking 10th nationally in power-play efficiency. Before joining the RedHawks, he spent previous seasons in various roles with Bowling Green State University and the Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League.

“I look forward to developing our student-athletes on and off the ice and continuing the success of this historic program,” Schutte said. “I’m excited to get to know the team on a more personal level and get involved with the community and alumni programs.”

The Thunder Bay, Ontario, native played four seasons at Miami, helping the team qualify for its second-ever NCAA Tournament as a senior during the 1996-97 campaign. He tallied 58 points on 25 goals and 33 assists over 131 games. He received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Miami in 1997. He and his wife, Carey, have three children, Hallie, Brady and Colin.

OHIO Hockey will return to Bird Arena on Sept. 20, against Purdue Northwest. For more information on OHIO Hockey or tickets visit www.ohiobobcathockey.com.
