From illness to wellness: breaking the stigma
In honor of Suicide Prevention Day, OHIO Zanesville had the opportunity to host "Illness to Wellness,” an event and presentation featuring author, attorney, and activist Melody Moezzi. She shared her personal experiences with mental illness, particularly her journey with bipolar disorder. Moezzi’s message was one of resilience, courage and hope, offering deep insights into mental health while challenging the stigma that often surrounds it.
Breaking the Stigma: Facing Fears
One of the most striking elements of Moezzi’s presentation was her willingness to share her own story. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Moezzi discussed the challenges she faced not just in managing the condition, but in confronting the societal stigma that surrounds mental health. In one of her memorable moments, Moezzi shared, “Fear keeps you sick.” Emphasizing that fear can prevent people from seeking the help they need and leads them to suffer in silence.
Moezzi spoke about the importance of embracing differences in how our minds work. She made it clear that having a mental health condition does not equal being broken or incapable.
“Minds that work differently—we are not damaged, we are not incapable, we are extraordinary, we are exceptional, we are exquisite,” Moezzi said, urging the audience to view mental health not as a limitation, but as part of the diverse and unique ways in which individuals experience the world.
Moezzi's powerful words resonated deeply, particularly with those in the audience who may have been suppressed or misunderstood because of their mental health challenges. Her message was clear, people with minds that function differently have something exceptional to offer the world. She encouraged everyone to “spread the word” and challenge social stigmas surrounding mental health.
The CARE Team’s Mission: Raising Awareness and Support
This event was part of the OHIO Zanesville CARE Team’s ongoing mission to shine light on mental health struggles and ensure that vital resources are accessible in a variety of ways.
"It is part of the CARE Team’s mission to raise awareness of mental health issues and the resources available to our students and community," Dev Poling, associate professor in the College of Arts and Sciences, said. "We were very fortunate to have Melody Moezzi come to campus to help fulfill the CARE Team mission. She shared her experiences openly with strength, humor, and compassion."
By bringing in speakers like Moezzi, the CARE Team fosters open conversations and provides students with valuable tools and information about mental health. The team’s efforts are crucial in ensuring that mental health resources are accessible and that students feel supported.
Narcan and Opioid Awareness: A Critical Resource
In addition to addressing mental health, Moezzi also stressed the importance of being prepared for emergencies related to opioid overdoses. She urged the audience to carry Narcan (naloxone), a medication that reverses opioid overdoses, noting how “it can save a life in critical moments,” reminding everyone that having Narcan on hand could prevent a tragedy.
To further support this initiative, Muskingum Health was present at the event, giving out free Narcan packs to students. This vital resource ensured that attendees left not only with a deeper understanding of mental health, but with a practical tool to help in emergency situations. Empowering Future Professionals
Moezzi’s message was especially impactful for students entering fields like healthcare, social work, education and other related areas. Her ability to blend personal stories with practical advice on mental health and opioid awareness created a powerful learning experience.
"Her insightful reflections will certainly have a lasting impact on current and future professionals," Poling shared.
By encouraging students to embrace mental health differences and act against opioid overdoses, Moezzi’s presentation empowered future professionals to approach their work with empathy and confidence.
Looking Ahead: A Call to Compassion and Action
The "Illness to Wellness" event left a profound impact on everyone who attended, sparking crucial conversations about mental health awareness. Moezzi’s openness about her experiences, combined with her call to action, created an atmosphere of empowerment and urgency. Students were not only encouraged to reflect on their own minds, but also to consider how they can contribute in their community.
Through her writing and advocacy, Moezzi encourages individuals to see mental health not as a barrier, but as a unique part of the human experience that can flourish into growth and understanding. This message, along with the resources provided will no doubt resonate with students as they move forward not only in school, but in their careers.
