Important update for Ohio University employees and retirees
The Social Security Fairness Act, signed into law in January 2025, has eliminated the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). These provisions previously reduced Social Security benefits for public employees who receive both Social Security benefits and public pension benefits when retiring.
This change affects members of Ohio University's retirement plans, including OPERS, STRS, and ARP, who are also eligible for Social Security benefits from another employer. The Act removes WEP and GPO deductions from Social Security benefits retroactively to January 1, 2024.
Please note that employment at Ohio University will still be exempt from Social Security, therefore employees will not earn Social Security credits while working here.
