Ohio Campus Safety Grant award to increase security, student safety

Ohio University is among 28 colleges and universities in Ohio that will receive funding for security projects that improve the safety of their campuses. OHIO was awarded $196,665 in funding from the Ohio Campus Safety Grant program that will be used to expand video surveillance on campus.

“We feel very fortunate for opportunities like this that allow us to advance our mission to ensure a safe community without having to find funding from other sources,” said Ohio University Police Department Captain Tim Ryan. “We really appreciate the Ohio legislature and Governor DeWine for making campus safety a priority.”

The Ohio Campus Safety Grant awards were announced by DeWine on Jan. 13 for security projects that enhance the safety of students and staff. To be eligible for grant funding, colleges and universities conducted a security and vulnerability assessment to identify areas in need of safety enhancements. The Ohio School Safety Center, which is a division of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, reviewed the campus safety grant applications in consultation with the Ohio Department of Higher Education.
