OHIO's Peer-Assisted Learning Program earns re-accreditation from International Center for Supplemental Instruction

Ohio University is proud to announce that the Academic Achievement Center’s (AAC) Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) Program has earned re-accreditation from the International Center for Supplemental Instruction at the University of Missouri–Kansas City. This recognition affirms Ohio University’s continued commitment to academic excellence and student success through evidence-based learning support.

The PAL Program, which provides collaborative learning sessions for historically challenging courses, helps students strengthen understanding, build confidence, and develop long-term study skills. The International Center’s re-accreditation acknowledges that Ohio University’s program meets the highest global standards for supplemental instruction, including peer leadership, training, and assessment practices.

“This re-accreditation is a significant achievement for Ohio University and for our students,” said Elizabeth Fallon, PhD, executive director of academic assistance. “It highlights the dedication of our PAL leaders and staff who create supportive, inclusive learning environments that empower students to take ownership of their education.”

Ohio University’s PAL Program serves thousands of students each year, with demonstrated impact on academic performance and retention. Students who regularly attend PAL sessions consistently earn higher grades and report greater confidence in their coursework compared to peers who do not participate.

Originally developed at the University of Missouri–Kansas City in 1973, Supplemental Instruction (SI) has since grown into an internationally recognized model for peer-assisted academic support. Ohio University has been an accredited program site since 2022, and this re-accreditation ensures the PAL Program remains aligned with international best practices.

“This recognition reflects Ohio University’s leadership in student-centered learning,” said Fallon. “We are honored to continue providing high-quality academic support that makes a measurable difference in students’ success.”
