OHIO’s Andrea Lewis named president of College Media Association

Ohio University’s Andrea Lewis recently moved into a national leadership role as the president of the Board of Directors of the College Media Association (CMA).

Lewis, who is the director of student media in OHIO’s E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, was sworn in as president of the CMA Board of Directors on Friday, Oct. 10, in Washington, D.C. Lewis had previously served as the president-elect of the organization since Nov. 1, 2024.

The CMA, which has nearly 600 members from across the country, is the leading voice for college media and its advisors.

“We are thrilled to have Andrea Lewis serving in this important leadership position with the College Media Association,” Scripps College of Communication Dean Scott Titsworth said. “I’m confident that this new role will benefit Andrea in her work with our students at Ohio University, while she also supports and helps to strengthen student media at colleges and universities across the country.”

Lewis has served as director of student media for the Scripps College of Communication since June of 2021. In her role at OHIO, she works with 25 student media organizations and experiential learning units to teach leadership, mentor students and provide back-end support, logistics and training in revenue generation.

Lewis interacts with hundreds of students each week across different disciplines in her work at OHIO. She is honored to now also be working with student media organizations all across the nation in her new position with the CMA.

“Stepping into this role connects me to a network of people who share the same goal of supporting student media and the administrators and educators who guide it,” Lewis said. “When we can leverage our collective knowledge, it strengthens how we help students and the programs that serve them.”

The CMA supports student media professionals, staff members and programs by providing educational resources, research and advocacy. In its work, the organization collaborates with professional media organizations and educational associations at local, state and national levels to strengthen the future of student journalism and education.

Hillary Warren, Ph.D., professor of journalism at Otterbein University and the immediate past president of the CMA, enjoyed working with Lewis at the CMA and is looking forward to seeing her now lead the organization.

"Andrea Lewis rightly sees CMA's fiscal sustainability as central to its mission to promote and protect student free speech,” Warren said. “It was an honor to serve with her, and I'm looking forward to her leadership in the coming year."

Laura Widmer, executive director of the National Scholastic Press Association/Associated Collegiate Press (NSPA/ACP), has been impressed by Lewis when they have worked together on projects and is happy to see her now leading the CMA.

“I am so excited to work with her as president of the CMA,” Widmer said. “Andrea is a go getter, she is business-minded and driven, all of the things you would want in a partner.”

Widmer said she enjoyed collaborating with Lewis on planning the 2025 fall convention, as they focused on how the convention could best benefit student journalists and advisors from around the nation.

“I’m really exited about her leadership with the CMA,” Widmer said, adding that she is confident her leadership will benefit student journalists and advisors across the country.
