Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine faculty member named president-elect of American Diabetes Association

The American Diabetes Association has announced that Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine Professor Elizabeth Beverly, Ph.D., has been selected as the president-elect of health care and education. She is part of a 15-member board of medical, scientific, education and executive business professionals who are responsible for ensuring the ADA advances its mission of diabetes research, advocacy, education and community support.

“I am honored to be chosen by the American Diabetes Association for this role,” said Beverly. “I look forward to elevating the needs and experiences of people with diabetes in rural and underserved communities, including Appalachian Ohio, while also celebrating the resilience and cultural richness that define this region.”

Beverly has been instrumental in Ohio University’s efforts to address diabetes through research, training and patient care. She previously served as co-director of the Diabetes Institute and is currently the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation Ralph S. Licklider, D.O. Endowed Professor in Behavioral Diabetes. She also co-directs the Southeastern Ohio Regional Quality Improvement Hub and the Diabetes Institute Summer Interprofessional Research Experience, an apprentice-based research program to educate and engage undergraduates in diabetes research.

“This is a well-deserved honor,” said Darlene Berryman, Ph.D., R.D., L.D., associate dean of research and innovation at the Heritage College. “Dr. Beverly has played a critical role in improving the lives of those affected with diabetes in Ohio. Her work as a researcher, educator and community champion has helped elevate awareness of diabetes and efforts to improve health outcomes.”

In 2023, Beverly received the Ohio University Presidential Research Scholar Award for her work in diabetes. She has been involved with the ADA for 17 years and served as the chair of behavioral medicine for the ADA’s planning committee from 2023 to 2025.

“It is a privilege to represent the Heritage College and Ohio University on a national stage as we work to advance equitable, affordable, and accessible diabetes care for all,” said Beverly.
