E.W. Scripps School of Journalism adopts artificial intelligence policy

The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University is embracing artificial intelligence as a new technology relevant to journalism in a policy approved at its April 8 faculty meeting.

The policy provides guidance to faculty and students on AI use in research, creative activity and coursework while encouraging both groups to learn the technology and use it in ways that follow professional journalism standards. The environmental impact of the technology is also included.

“We aimed at creating a comprehensive and ethically sound AI policy,” said Dr. Bernhard Debatin, professor of journalism. “While AI can be a helpful tool in many areas, it is not a panacea. We want to make sure that students and faculty understand the limitations of AI. We also want to draw attention to unintended side effects, such as AI’s impact on education and on the environment.”

The policy includes basic values, requirements for meaningful human control, accountability and transparency, integrity of content, ethical and legal considerations, educational considerations, environmental considerations, and academic freedom.

“I applaud the faculty’s efforts in creating this policy,” said Hans K. Meyer, director of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. “It will position the school at the forefront of ethical AI use in journalism and beyond.”
