School of Art + Design presents FORMS & FIGURES: Brad Schwieger & Chuck McWeeny Ceramics

The Ohio University School of Art + Design presents “FORMS & FIGURES: Chuck McWeeny and Brad Schwieger,” a pair of concurrent exhibitions celebrating the lifelong dedication to the art and craft of ceramics by two recently retired OHIO professors.

The exhibitions will be on view from Aug. 24 through Oct. 23, 2026, in the RTEC Art Gallery on the Athens campus. A public reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27. The exhibitions and reception are free and open to the public.

McWeeny, professor and dean emeritus of the College of Fine Arts, taught ceramics and foundations at Ohio University for more than 40 years. He also served as associate dean and dean of the College of Fine Arts from 2000 to 2012. After beginning early retirement in 2014, McWeeny continued teaching one semester each year until his full retirement in 2026.

Schwieger, professor emeritus of ceramics, joined Ohio University in 1990 and helped build a nationally recognized ceramics program within the School of Art + Design. Before joining OHIO, he taught at Vincennes University in Indiana. He holds an MFA from Utah State University and a BFA from the University of Iowa.

Schwieger’s work in the exhibition explores ideas he has developed throughout his career, including a lifelong fascination with ceramic materials and processes.

“I find an interesting parallel between architecture and pottery. Like architecture, pottery deals with elements of form and structure, interior/exterior, utility or containment, surface detail and adornment. I have attempted to produce work that shares the minimal and complex, the miniature and monumental, the formal elements of design, the implied and the possibility of actual function,” Schwieger said.

“FORMS & FIGURES” honors the enduring artistic practices, teaching, mentorship and contributions of two influential figures in Ohio University’s ceramics community, while showcasing the depth and breadth of their creative practices.

Gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with extended hours from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.
