OHIO students invited to Public Service Day event on Nov. 19
Ohio University’s Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Service is hosting its Public Service Day on Nov. 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Walter Hall Rotunda.
All OHIO students are invited to attend to hear public service professionals from across Ohio speak about their experiences and network with current students.
Public Service Day includes panels and a lunch and is free to attend, but students are encouraged to register as soon as possible, as spaces are limited.
The event begins with “Bobcat Alumni Experiences A – Z,” a panel covering the rewards and challenges that come with working in public service.
Speakers include David McCorkle, an assistant city manager and economic development director; Dave Koren, president of Koren Consulting; and Carla Wallace, senior executive assistant of the Franklin County Board of Commissioners. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Ani Ruhil, associate dean and professor at the Voinovich School.
The second panel, “Early Career Lessons I Learned the Hard Way,” will offer advice based on the knowledge of experienced professionals.
Panelists include Trey Frazee, operations manager for the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge; Chloe Musick, director of public affairs and marketing at the Sustainable Ohio Public Energy Council; and Asti Powell, executive director for the Paper City Mentoring Project. That panel will be moderated by Dr. Jim Mahoney, executive in residence and assistant professor for the Voinovich School.
The event also provides networking opportunities beyond the panels. Tables staffed by sponsoring organizations will provide students with the many pathways a career in public service can take.
Organizations students can network with include the Ohio Secretary of State's office, Buckeye Hills Regional Council, Ohio City and County Management Association, Athens County Job and Family Services, Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission and several more.
For Ohio University students, Public Service Day offers insights into future career possibilities, as well as key connections for critical networking.
