Fall 2020 Graduate Q&A: Natalie Scheffler

Finance major Natalie Scheffler is excited to apply the skills she's developed at OHIO to her full-time position as a KeyBank personal banker starting in June.

We talked with Natalie about her time at OHIO and what excites her most about being in the real world. Read the Q&A below to learn more about Natalie's time in the College of Business!

What did you study at Ohio University?

I majored in finance. I chose this field because I have loved math and numbers ever since I started school. I also enjoyed my business classes and finance was the perfect combination.

What organizations were you involved in at Ohio University?

I was a member of Pi Beta Phi, which was a huge contribution to my academic success at OHIO. There were always other Pi Phis in my classes and my major, giving me a huge support system and lots of study buddies.

Did you have any internships? Explain your internship experience(s).

I interned for KeyBank in the summer of 2020. I was a retail banking intern and learned all the daily activities of the branch. I acted as a bank teller as well as a personal banker to interact with clients and improve their financial wellness. During this internship, I learned that you truly have to love where you work. Waking up and going to the same place every day is hard if you don’t somewhat enjoy the place you are going to. I also learned how much my field can help people to better their financial journeys. I believe that helping the clients is the best part about my job.

What is your favorite memory from being a student in the College of Business?

My favorite memory from being a College of Business student was my final cluster presentation. It’s something every student dreads, but when it is done, so much weight is lifted off your shoulders! And celebrating with my team after is a time I’ll never forget.

What are you most grateful for about your time at OHIO/in the College of Business?

I am most grateful for the professors and advisors that helped me get to where I am today. Without them I wouldn’t know what I wanted to do and I wouldn’t have been able to graduate in 3.5 years.

Is there a particular course, organization, event, professor, etc. that really impacted you during your time at OHIO?

The one course that made me change my major and plan is accounting. After taking accounting, I fell in love with numbers and money which took me down the finance path.

What do you think was your greatest accomplishment as a college student?

My greatest accomplishment from my college career is securing an internship and then a full-time job. I would not have been able to do this without the help of the College of Business.

What is your favorite thing about Athens/what will you miss the most?

My favorite thing about Athens is how Bobcats help Bobcats. No matter where you are you can find a friend.

What will you be doing after graduation? What are you most looking forward to about starting your career?

Starting in June, I will start a full-time position with KeyBank as a personal banker. Until then, I am working for them part time and raising a puppy.When it comes to starting my career, I am most excited to start my adult life and make “big-girl” money.

What is one skill or concept you developed in the College of Business that you will apply to your future job and beyond?

The biggest skill I learned through the College of Business is public speaking. This was a weak point of mine going into college and I have been able to change that through practice in my different courses. This skill will come in handy when I have to present at meetings in my career.

If you could give current or future Ohio University students one piece of advice, what would it be?

My biggest piece of advice is that you have to find a balance that works for you. College is supposed to be a fun time to find yourself and friends, but it is also a big step to the rest of your life. Have fun, but get your school work done!
