Updates required for Adobe Creative Cloud applications

Adobe has recently released security updates to address a critical security vulnerability in multiple Creative Cloud products.

In researching the issue, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) discovered that some University-owned devices also have older Adobe applications installed that do not comply with OHIO’s Adobe Creative Cloud licensing and have reached the “End of Support” stage. Adobe no longer provides technical support or security updates for End of Support applications. Furthermore, OHIO’s Secure Computer Management Standard states that unsupported software is not permitted on University-owned computers.

What is OIT doing?

Beginning the week of March 28, 2022, OIT will update the vulnerable applications, which include Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects, and Premiere Rush.

Then, beginning May 9, OIT will begin removing versions of Adobe Creative Cloud and Creative Suite applications that are no longer supported. This includes all Adobe applications 2019 and older.

What does this mean for me?

On University-owned computers, no action is required. OIT will update the affected applications.

If you would like to update your personally-owned computer or update your University-owned computer sooner, open the Creative Cloud Desktop application or any of your Adobe Creative Cloud 2021 or 2022 applications. The Creative Cloud Desktop application will check for updates and offer to install them if updates are needed.

If you do not receive a message indicating updates are needed, you do not need to take further action.

If you have Creative Cloud 2019 or older Adobe Creative Cloud or Creative Suite applications, you are encouraged to delete them and replace them with their current equivalents. If you receive a notification that your license is expired or expiring, please replace it with the current version by following the steps below.

University-owned employee computers:
  • Windows users: Use the Software Center to install the “Creative Cloud” application
  • macOS users: Use Self Service to install the “Creative Cloud” application
Personally owned employee computers, tablets, or smart phones:
  • Visit creativecloud.adobe.com and log in with your OHIO ID, specifying a “Work/School” account. The installation process for the new software will offer to remove any outdated software it finds. OIT recommends removing all outdated software.
University-owned shared/student-use computers:
  • For University-owned computers used by students, contact the IT Service Desk to request access to the Shared Device License of Adobe Creative Cloud on one or more computers. Please include the device name.

Additionally, the entire OHIO community is eligible to use Creative Cloud Express on personal computers and mobile devices.
