Retention policy extended for Microsoft Teams recordings
The Office of Information Technology (OIT) has recently extended the retention policy for Microsoft Teams meeting and event recordings. Previously, all Teams recordings were automatically saved in Teams or OneDrive for 60 days before expiring.
Now, as of June 21, 2022, all Teams recordings will auto-save for 18 weeks. OIT has extended the retention policy to reflect the typical length of an academic semester.
After a recorded Microsoft Teams meeting or event has concluded, the recording can be found in one of two locations:
- For channel meetings, the recording will be stored in a Recordings folder in the Files tab for the channel.
- For non-channel meetings, the recording will be stored in the Recordings folder in the OneDrive space of the person who started the recording.
Now, 18 weeks after a Teams meeting or event has concluded, the recording will be automatically deleted from your Teams or OneDrive. You can permanently save a recording in a variety of ways:
- Move it to a different folder in your OneDrive by selecting the ellipses (…) next to the file name, selecting Move to, and choosing a permanent location for the recording.
- Manually edit the expiration date of the recording by selecting the ellipses (…) next to the file name, selecting Details, and modify the Expiration date field.
- Download a copy of the video. Please note: Downloading files containing sensitive information or data to your personal device is not permitted.
