Scripps College of Communication Professor Stan Alost (22+ years at the School of Visual Communication) has a bold theory: on any given day, the world gets information and entertainment produced by Scripps alumni.

Events in September show that Alost’s theory is sound:

Programming content: Season 4 of Karma’s World created by Ludacris came to Netflix Sept. 22; Nashville-based Marcus Meston (BSC ’17) composed the music with a colleague.
Queen Elizabeth’s funeral: Pulitzer Prize winner Marcus Yam (VisCom) of the Los Angeles Times, and other VisCom alumni covered the story from London.
Pro football: Dallas-based videographer Will Laterza (BSJ ’22) is Live Content Correspondent for the National Football League with a vast audience.
In-depth news: Columbus-based freelancer Maddie McGarvey (VisCom ’12) photographed The New York Times’ stories on child poverty, physician burnout, and more.
Congress: Scripps-in-DC intern Emily Hanna (VisCom ’24) photographed a charity softball game Sept. 14 (women in Congress vs press); Emily’s photo of the winners was widely shared on social media by congresswomen from New Mexico and Florida.
Music: In Los Angeles, Alex Malcolm (BSC ’18) was promoted at Warner Music Group to manager of Visual Media Licensing.
Culture/politics: GQ’s cover piece on Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez by Wes Lowery (BSJ ’17) generated multi-media buzz.
Film: Scripps Professor Frederick Lewis (Media Arts and Studies) screened his documentary of Dayton poet-writer Paul Laurence Dunbar at Brown University.
US Open and WNBA Finals: Compelling photos by Sarah Stier (VisCom ’18) and Maddie Meyer (VisCom ’14) of Getty Images were published worldwide.

Awards

Scripps students won regional Emmy Awards in three categories, a tribute to experiential learning plus training in storytelling and production.

Sports Program or Live Sporting Event - Six Scripps BSJ students won a regional Emmy for Gridiron Glory (Episode 12 of Season 22): Max Brunke (’23), Benjamin Byers (’22), Mike Roth (’22), Claire Schiopota (’24), Dylan Theisen (’23) and Nick Viland (’22).
Fiction Long Form - Anthony Pape (Media Arts and Studies ’21) for “Overdose” (series pilot).
Non-Fiction Short Form - Joe Timmerman (BS VisCom and Journalism ’23) and Leslie Ostronic (BS VisCom ’23) for “Facing Fentanyl.”

Faculty

In New York, MediaPost published a report by Laeeq Khan on his new research (with colleagues from other universities) on messaging about N95 masks. Khan, Ph.D. (Michigan State University; Media and Information Studies ’14) is director of Scripps’ SMART Lab (Social Media Analytics Research Team).

In Los Angeles, Hans Meyer, Ph.D., (E.W. Scripps School of Journalism) attended the Online News Association conference (#ONA2022 Sept. 21-24). Meyer, Ph.D., was impressed by presentations delivered by Scripps graduate Lynn Walsh (BSJ ’08), an Emmy-winning journalist who helps lead the Trusting News project to empower credibility and trust. Walsh’s advice: tone and choice of words matter.

Hidden gem

Where is Ken Dixon (BSJ ’76)?

Dixon is in Connecticut, playing in a (press) rock band, writing for the Connecticut Post and winning national press honors. Dixon was inducted into the Connecticut Journalism Hall of Fame in 2019.
