OHIO graduate students invited to register for the Three Minute Thesis® competition
All graduate students at Ohio University who are currently working on their thesis or dissertation are invited to participate in the Three Minute Thesis competition.
Interested students are encouraged to apply early when registration opens online on Friday, Jan. 19, at 8 a.m. Participation will be capped at 32 entrants. Competition dates will consist of two semi-final heats, taking place on Feb. 13th and 15th at 7 p.m. in the Stocker Center 103.
About the Three Minute Thesis Competition
The Three Minute Thesis® (3MT) was founded by The University of Queensland in 2008. Students will be challenged to present essential findings and details within their thesis or dissertation for three minutes or less. The key here is for students to adapt their research into a concise and palatable package for an audience that may not be inherently knowledgeable on the background of their project.
“As a student, I was able to participate in the Three Minute Thesis, and it really helped put my entire project into perspective,” said Nathan Blackburn, Director of Communications and Professional Development for the Graduate College. “It may seem daunting to try to put everything into only three minutes, but it really challenges you to determine what are the most key and essential parts of your research, and you get to learn about research from all other disciplines at Ohio University.”
Prize Details
This year's prizes are sponsored by Ohio University alum, Rene Paulson, founder of Elite Research LLC. They are as follows:
• $2,000 (1st place), $1,000 (2nd place), $500 (3rd place) and $250 (each remaining finalist)
• Two People's Choice Awards ($100) will be given, one each to a master's and doctoral student.
Competition Schedule
Competitions will be held as two semi-final heats in the evenings of Feb. 13 and 15, both at 7 p.m. Each heat will be capped at sixteen participants for a total of 32 participants. The top participants from each semi-final heat will be invited to take part in the final round on the evening of Feb. 21st.
All participants must be available to participate in one of the semi-final heats and the final round.
